See what Shackleton saw. Stand where he stood. Understand, finally, why he kept coming back.

Follow in the footsteps of Shackleton. This voyage follows the survival route in sequence. South Georgia first, aiming to reach King Haakon Bay, where the James Caird made landfall after the 800-mile crossing from Elephant Island; Fortuna Bay, where the hike to Stromness follows the final miles of the mountain crossing; and Grytviken, where Shackleton rests. Then north-west to Elephant Island, Point Wild, where 22 men waited under two upturned lifeboats for the ship that took four months to come. Then south into Antarctica, the continent the Endurance never reached.

With just 36 guests, six Senior Polar Guides, and four Zodiacs on the water at once, every guest explores South Georgia at its wildest and the Antarctic Peninsula together, with the freedom to linger, observe, and experience the polar world without compromise.

Spring breathes new life into the Southern Ocean as South Georgia’s vast king penguin colonies teem with activity and elephant seals battle for breeding territories along the beaches. Fur seal pups begin to appear, while wandering albatross soar effortlessly overhead. As the expedition continues south into Antarctica, gentoo, chinstrap, and Adélie penguins begin nesting, seals haul out on pristine sea ice, and the first humpback and minke whales return to feed in the nutrient-rich waters, marking the beginning of another extraordinary polar season.

19 days. 36 guests. The same Southern Ocean. Different century.

Expedition highlights

  • Shackleton's route, end to end. South Georgia, Antarctica, and Elephant Island in a single voyage. These are the locations the story moves between, covered in one continuous itinerary.

  • Follow Shackleton’s footsteps—walk the windswept shores where Sir Ernest Shackleton’s legendary journey unfolded. Visit Grytviken, where his final resting place lies, and connect with the island’s compelling polar history firsthand.

  • King Haakon Bay. Where the James Caird made landfall after the 800-mile open-boat journey from Elephant Island. The bay is remote, rarely visited, and unchanged.

  • The Fortuna Bay hike to Stromness. The final section of Shackleton's mountain crossing with Worsley and Crean. The walk rewards those willing to do it. The arrival at Stromness is its own thing.

  • Elephant Island. Point Wild — where 22 men lived under two upturned lifeboats through an Antarctic winter, waiting for a ship that took four months to come. We aim to land or Zodiac cruise, conditions allowing.

  • Antarctica in early season. November brings the continent white and largely undisturbed. Leopard seals on ice floes, penguin colonies at the nest, glaciers calving into channels that carry no traffic.

  • South Georgia wildlife alongside the history. King penguin in courtship at St Andrews Bay and Salisbury Plain, elephant seal bulls competing on the beaches, wandering albatrosses from Bird Island.

  • 36 guests aboard Aureum. Active fin stabilisers for the crossings. Ice-class hull for Antarctic waters. Six senior polar guides across the whole voyage.

Experiences

We don’t follow a fixed itinerary

We prefer to embrace spontaneity and make the most of every opportunity nature presents to us.  This is how we believe a true, authentic expedition should run…for those who don’t just travel—they explore.

Our listed itineraries are for guidance only. The day-to-day activities may vary depending on the ice, the weather, and the wildlife. Landings are subject to site availability and permissions, and always in line with IAATO guidelines and Antarctic Treaty regulations, and follow the strictest environmental protocols.

For even more flexibility, get in touch about making this a private yacht charter.

What your expedition could look like

Day 01 51°41′42 'S, 57°51′02' W
Tiny port in the town of Port Stanley in Falkland Islands Shutterstock Secret Atlas

Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

Embarkation day.

Most guests fly into Mount Pleasant Airport, where the expedition team will meet you. Luggage is transferred directly to the vessel. A charter bus into Stanley together with the team, the first chance for introductions.

If you are already on the Falklands, join us at the Tourist Office from 15:00. The afternoon is yours: the Maritime Museum, the waterfront, a pint at the Globe.

Aboard by 18:00 for mandatory safety briefings. Welcome cocktail, dinner, and the official start of the expedition.

Days 02–03 57°30 ′S, 40°00 ′W
Southern giant petrel in flight over the stormy Drake Passage Antarctica Secret Atlas

Southern Ocean

The Scotia Sea passage.

Aureum's wing stabilisers manage the crossing; the onboard programme holds your attention between polar science lectures, photography workshops, and personal accounts from the expedition team.

On day 3, we hope to cross the Antarctic Convergence and pass Shag Rocks; jagged, isolated islets alive with seabirds, seals, and whales, the first land since the Falklands. South Georgia is one day ahead.

Days 04–09 54° 16′ S, 36° 30′ W
King Penguins Aptenodytes patagonicus at the beach Salisbury Plain South Georgia Antarctic Shutterstock Secret Atlas

South Georgia

The approach takes us past Bird Island, one of the greatest concentrations of nesting wandering albatrosses on earth. Wildlife meets you before the first landing.

King Haakon Bay is where Shackleton's party made landfall after the open-boat crossing from Elephant Island. The bay is remote, rarely visited, and the scale of what happened there settles slowly.

Grytviken is a formal customs stop, and rather more besides. The museum, the abandoned whaling station, and in the cemetery: Shackleton and Wild under simple headstones. We take time here.

The remaining days move between St Andrews Bay, Salisbury Plain, Gold Harbour, Cooper Bay, Fortuna Bay and Drygalski Fjord. At Fortuna Bay, the hike toward Stromness follows the final section of the mountain crossing, the ground Shackleton, Worsley, and Crean walked on in 1916 to raise the alarm.

Early morning landings in golden light. King penguin colonies in full courtship. Elephant seal bulls compete on the beaches before fur seal numbers peak later in the season.

Possible locations: Bird Island, Elsehul Bay, King Haakon Bay, St Andrews Bay, Fortuna Bay, Stromness, Salisbury Plain, Cooper Bay, Gold Harbour, Drygalski Fjord, Grytviken, Nordenskjold Glacier, Ocean Harbour.

Days 10-11 57°30 ′S, 40°00 ′W
Paul Copestake lecture Polar Athena Crossing The Drake Antarctica Secret Atlas

Southern Ocean

Aureum turns south-west across the Southern Ocean, retracing the route of the James Caird in reverse. Lectures and workshops continue on board. Time on deck if the weather permits.

On day 11 or 12, we hope to reach Elephant Island — Point Wild specifically, where 22 men waited under two overturned lifeboats for four months while Shackleton sailed to South Georgia for help. We aim to land or conduct a Zodiac cruise, subject to conditions.

Days 12-16 69°30’S, 65°00’W
Group of Adelie penguins Pygoscelis adeliae on an iceberg in Antarctic sound Shutterstock Secret Atlas

South into Antarctic waters. Over four days, Aureum works through narrow channels and hidden bays: the Antarctic Sound, Weddell Sea, Gerlache Strait and Deception Island.

Leopard seals on ice floes. Gentoo, Chinstrap, and Adelie penguins at the nest. The silence of glacial amphitheatres broken by calving ice. For many guests, the moment that defines the entire voyage is stepping ashore on the seventh continent.

November brings Antarctica's early season, largely untrafficked, ice still present in the channels, the white of the peninsula not yet softened by summer. The continent as Shackleton would have known it.

Possible locations: Antarctic Sound, Paulet Island, Weddell Sea, Brown Bluff, Cierva Cove, Trinity Island, Gerlache Strait, Hughes Bay, Wilhelmina Bay, Deception Island.

Day 17-18 59°55'5 'S, 64°17'18 'W
hourglass dolphin

Drake Passage

Cape Horn ahead. The Drake Passage, two days of sailing among the albatrosses with the programme continuing as it has throughout: lectures, workshops, time on deck.

Aureum's wing stabilisers hold their value here too. The Drake earns its reputation. The crossing is manageable; what happened here is not.

Day 16 54°48′26′ 'S, 68°18′29′ 'W
Boats in the Ushuaia harbor port Ushuaia Shutterstock Secret Atlas

Ushuaia, Argentina

Disembarkation after breakfast, once the ship is cleared. Typically from 09:00.

The expedition ends in Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city, and a reasonable place to end 19 days that covered two of its most extraordinary islands and a continent.

FAQs

Where does this expedition depart from?

The expedition departs from Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands. Guests fly independently to Mount Pleasant Airport (MPN) in the Falklands (flights not included), with connections typically via Santiago, Chile or the UK. An included transfer will take you from the airport to the harbour for embarkation.

Guests already on the islands or arriving earlier should meet at the jetty in front of the Falkland Islands Tourist Board (times and full details will be provided closer to departure). Embarkation begins in the afternoon on Day 1.

What if the return flight is moved forward or delayed?

  • Return Flight – Moved Forward

To avoid prolonged delays in Antarctica, the return flight may be moved forward. Accommodation and all other inclusions remain as per the original itinerary. No refund will be extended in this scenario.

  • Return Flight – Delayed

If weather delays the return, the group will remain in Antarctica with meals and accommodation provided on board. Should delays exceed two days with no improvement forecasted, the captain may choose to sail back to South America for safety. The trip concludes at Puerto Natales airport, and guests are responsible for any onward travel adjustments.

Will we visit Grytviken and Shackleton’s grave?

We’ll aim to visit Grytviken, the historic whaling station on South Georgia. Here, you’ll have the chance to see the grave of the legendary explorer Ernest Shackleton and learn about the island’s fascinating history.

Why combine South Georgia with Antarctica?

South Georgia adds a completely different dimension to the journey. While Antarctica is raw and otherworldly, South Georgia offers some of the largest wildlife spectacles on Earth, with immense penguin rookeries and dramatic, glacier-carved landscapes.

When is the best time to visit South Georgia with Antarctica?

The South Georgia and Antarctic season runs from November through March (during the austral summer). Each month offers something unique:

  • November: Pristine landscapes, courtship displays, and elephant seal pups in South Georgia.

  • December–January: Peak wildlife activity, with penguin chicks hatching, fur seal colonies thriving, and long days of sunlight.

  • February–March: Excellent whale watching, penguin fledglings on the move, and softer golden light for photography.

When is penguin breeding season in South Georgia and Antarctica?

In South Georgia, king penguins breed year-round, with the largest gatherings of adults and chicks visible from November through March. You’ll also find gentoo, macaroni, and chinstrap penguins here, all of which follow a more typical summer breeding cycle. Fur seals pup in December and January, adding to the island’s wildlife spectacle.

In Antarctica, Adélie, gentoo, and chinstrap penguins all follow a similar breeding cycle—laying eggs in November, hatching in December, and raising chicks that fledge by January and February. Crested species such as macaroni and southern rockhopper penguins also breed in suitable sub-Antarctic habitats, adding vibrant flashes of colour to the rookeries. Emperor penguins, which breed on the sea ice further south, follow a unique cycle—laying eggs in the winter and raising chicks that are ready to fledge by the Antarctic summer.

Can you visit South Georgia and Antarctica in winter?

No. Expedition travel is only possible from November to March, during the austral summer. In winter, sea ice, extreme cold, and lack of daylight make voyages impossible.

When is the best time for whale watching in South Georgia and Antarctica?

Whales are present throughout the season, but sightings peak in February and March, when humpbacks, minkes, and sometimes orcas gather in large numbers to feed on krill-rich waters.

How long does it take to fly between King George Island and Puerto Natales?

The flight between Puerto Natales and King George Island takes just two to two and a half hours, compared to the two full days required to cross the Drake Passage by sea.

Can flights to / from King George Island be delayed?

Yes. Antarctic weather is unpredictable, and flights can be postponed until it is safe to travel. Secret Atlas builds flexibility into itineraries to accommodate these potential delays.

Will we visit Prion Island and see the Wandering Albatross?

With a small group of just 44 guests, we have the opportunity to reach remote sites like Prion Island by Zodiac cruise, and we will aim to do so. This allows you to witness Wandering Albatrosses nesting for an extraordinary photographic opportunity.

Please note, however, that access is not guaranteed due to potential restrictions and variable weather conditions.

How much luggage can I bring?

We recommend bringing a soft-sided luggage bag that can be easily stored in your cabin. It’s important to check with your airline about luggage size or weight restrictions.
