What you can do on your private Antarctic charter

Follow the path of Antarctic explorers

Antarctica's coasts represent the ultimate testing ground where explorers pushed human endurance to breaking points. Your private charter can trace these heroic routes:

  • Shackleton's legacy – visit his grave in Grytviken, South Georgia, and walk portions of his crossing route

  • Historic huts – explore preserved expedition bases with contents frozen as explorers left them

  • Whaling stations – abandoned South Georgia facilities tell stories of industrial-scale operations

  • Port Lockroy – former British research station turned museum

  • Deception Island – volcanic caldera where whalers and expeditions sought shelter

The Falkland Islands add sites related to Darwin's Beagle voyage and the 1982 conflict between Britain and Argentina.

Wildlife watching from penguins to whales

Antarctic waters and coastlines support the highest concentrations of wildlife on Earth during the austral summer. Your private charter positions you exactly where and when viewing opportunities peak, with flexibility to extend time at productive sites rather than maintaining rigid schedules.

Penguin colonies:

  • Emperor penguins – the largest penguin species, accessible at remote colonies in the Weddell Sea and along the Antarctic coast

  • King penguins – massive rookeries in South Georgia hosting hundreds of thousands of birds

  • Gentoo, chinstrap, and Adélie penguins – abundant throughout the Antarctic Peninsula

  • Macaroni and rockhopper penguins – found in the Falklands and South Georgia with distinctive crests

Marine mammals:

  • Humpback whales – frequently approach vessels, bubble-net feeding and breaching

  • Orcas (killer whales) – hunting seals along ice edges and in open water

  • Minke and fin whales – common throughout Antarctic waters

  • Blue whales – occasionally spotted in productive feeding areas

  • Leopard seals – apex predators hunting penguins from ice floes

  • Crabeater, Weddell, and fur seals – hauled out on ice and beaches

Seabirds:

  • Wandering albatross – the largest flying birds on Earth, with wingspans exceeding 3 meters

  • Giant petrels, cape petrels, and snow petrels – following the vessel across the Southern Ocean

  • Antarctic terns, skuas, and sheathbills – nesting near penguin colonies

South Georgia alone supports breeding populations exceeding 30 million seabirds. Your flexible schedule means waiting for optimal light, returning to sites when conditions improve, and spending whatever time each encounter deserves.

Discover landscapes via hiking, mountaineering, and skiing

Antarctica and sub-Antarctic islands offer terrain ranging from coastal beaches to technical alpine peaks, with your private charter accessing environments matching your group's abilities and ambitions. Expert guides lead everything from gentle walks among penguin colonies to challenging summit attempts on peaks that have seen fewer ascents than Everest.

The Antarctic Peninsula's mountains provide opportunities for ski mountaineering, with couloirs and glaciated peaks offering descents through pristine powder snow. Your guides assess conditions, choose routes matching technical abilities, and provide instruction for those developing skills. Some groups focus their entire charter around ski objectives, using the yacht to access unclimbed peaks and first descents impossible to reach otherwise.

South Georgia presents particularly spectacular hiking, with routes from Shackleton's crossing to day hikes offering views across massive glaciers, penguin colonies, and seal-filled beaches. The island's alpine character creates dramatic relief, with peaks rising directly from the Southern Ocean to over 2,900 meters. Experienced mountaineers can attempt technical climbs with proper equipment and guides.

The Falkland Islands offer gentler terrain perfect for wildlife-focused walks, with beaches hosting elephant seals, sea lions, and multiple penguin species accessible via moderate hikes across tussock grass and coastal moorland.

Discover waters via kayaking, stand-up paddling, and ice diving

Antarctic waters create extraordinary paddling environments, with your yacht serving as a mobile base camp for water-based exploration:

Kayaking:

  • Launch directly from the vessel into protected bays and channels

  • Paddle among towering icebergs with penguins and seals visible underwater

  • Experienced kayakers tackle longer crossings in Southern Ocean conditions

  • Beginners learn techniques in sheltered locations under expert instruction

  • Multi-day kayak expeditions possible with yacht support

Stand-up paddling:

  • Higher vantage point for photography and wildlife observation

  • Access to shallow areas where icebergs ground

  • Modern SUP boards suitable for most fitness levels

  • Full immersion gear provided for cold water safety

Ice diving (for certified divers):

  • Descend beneath Antarctic ice shelves and icebergs

  • Witness ice formations, colorful invertebrates, and Antarctic fish species

  • Experience otherworldly blue light filtering through ice

  • Encounter seals and penguins underwater in their hunting environment

  • Yacht's dive platform and heated spaces support multiple dives per day

  • Dive guides ensure safety in extreme polar conditions

Snorkeling (in drysuits):

  • Surface interactions with penguins and seals

  • Observe ice formations from water level

  • Less technical than diving but equally memorable

Practice and improve photography skills

Your private charter removes typical photography constraints. Return to locations when weather improves, position for sunrise light on icebergs, or spend entire days at penguin colonies documenting behavior. Professional photography guides (available on request) provide tailored instruction from basic exposure to advanced wildlife action techniques, helping you master challenges like exposing for white snow, capturing fast-moving subjects, and shooting the aurora australis. Review images together each evening and adjust approaches for the next day's opportunities.

Antarctica yacht charter FAQs

When is the best time of year to take an Antarctica yacht charter?

The cruise season in Antarctica runs from November until the end of March. Outside of this period, there are no cruises to Antarctica due to the harsh weather and ice conditions.

November is springtime in Antarctica. Penguins are courting and chicks begin to hatch. As the month goes on, the days get longer. There are fewer visitors in the early season, making it a fantastic time for uninterrupted landscape photography during an Antarctica private expedition.

December has the longest hours and warmest temperatures for visiting the 7th continent. It’s a time when wildlife is particularly active.

January is a popular month for Antarctica yacht charters. There are plenty of penguin chicks, it’s a great month for seeing seals and whales, and there is nearly 24 hours of daylight. The sea ice also breaks up further, making more places accessible.

The animal activity and good conditions continue into February, the month when sea ice is usually at its lowest. Many penguin chicks are still ashore, molting their furry down coats that will soon become adult plumage, enabling them to take to the water for feeding.

In March, as autumn gets underway, the nights get darker and the temperatures get colder. It's a good month to spot whales and seals, although many of the penguin chicks will be fledged.

Are there any additional costs I should be aware of when chartering a yacht to Antarctica?

Our Antarctica yacht charters are offered on an all-inclusive basis. All meals are included on Secret Atlas private charters, freshly cooked each day by our superb chefs. Safety equipment, fuel, guides, and crew are all included in the price.

Additional fees for activities such as museum visits are not included. Nor are tips for the crew or flights to and from the embarkation/disembarkation point for your Antarctica private yacht charter.

What’s the best type of ship to charter to get the most out of an Antarctica yacht charter?

Our fleet of ice-breaking expedition-style ships are perfect for adventures in Antarctica. They can explore the bays of the South Shetland islands and go deep into the channels of the Antarctic Peninsula.

They are agile, go-anywhere ships designed for ultimate safety in the remotest environments on Earth.

What permits are required for yacht travel in Antarctica?

Some locations have restrictions or require permits – but we take care of all this for you.

What is the duration of your private charters to Antarctica?

An Antarctica yacht charter will typically last between eight and 12 days, although we can plan longer trips if you wish.
