Plot your own adventure to one of the most ecologically rich islands on the planet, with a South Georgia yacht charter.

The South Georgia yacht charter experience

Take your friends, family, or colleagues to meet the penguins of South Georgia. Way out in the South Atlantic, this island wildlife sanctuary promises animal encounters like nowhere else. With Secret Atlas’s years of expedition-planning experience, superstar expedition team, and fleet of private vessels at your disposal, chart your own path with a South Georgia yacht charter.

The sheer abundance of life here in this incomparable place of great bio-diversity is head-spinningly immense. The distinctive king penguin colonies – where hundreds of thousands of penguins court, brood eggs on their feet, and finally watch their eggs crack open when tiny chicks are born – put on one of nature’s greatest shows.

The wildlife rightly steals the headlines, but your South Georgia yacht charter will play to your tastes. Central to the story of Antarctic exploration, the island attracts as many history enthusiasts as it does ornithologists and wilderness lovers. Tell us what you want to see, and we can make it happen of your South Georgia private yacht charter. Looking for ideas? We’ll lend our expertise during the planning phase.

What you can do on your private South Georgia charter

Follow the path of South Georgia explorers

South Georgia holds the most concentrated collection of Antarctic exploration history anywhere in the Southern Ocean. Your private charter can trace these legendary routes:

  • Shackleton's grave – visit the Grytviken cemetery where the great explorer is buried, having requested South Georgia as his final resting place

  • The Shackleton crossing – walk portions of the route his small party traversed after the Endurance sank, crossing glaciers and mountains to reach Stromness whaling station

  • Historic whaling stations – explore Grytviken, Stromness, Husvik, and Leith Harbour where industrial-scale operations once dominated the island

  • South Georgia Museum – housed in the former whaling station manager's villa at Grytviken

  • Ernest Shackleton's legacy – stand where his men awaited rescue and learn how he saved every member of his crew

The island's whaling history spans from the early 1900s through 1965, with abandoned stations providing haunting glimpses into an industry that processed hundreds of thousands of whales.

Wildlife watching from king penguins to elephant seals

South Georgia supports the highest concentrations of wildlife in the Southern Ocean, with breeding populations exceeding 30 million seabirds alone. Your private charter positions you exactly where and when viewing opportunities peak, with flexibility to extend time at productive sites rather than maintaining rigid schedules.

Penguin colonies:

  • King penguins – massive rookeries at Salisbury Plain, St. Andrews Bay, and Gold Harbour hosting hundreds of thousands of birds

  • Macaroni penguins – millions breeding in dense colonies on steep slopes

  • Gentoo penguins – nesting near beaches throughout the island

  • Chinstrap penguins – smaller colonies in select locations

Marine mammals:

  • Elephant seals – enormous breeding harems where bulls weighing up to 4,000kg battle for dominance

  • Antarctic fur seals – recovered from near-extinction to populations exceeding 4 million

  • Leopard seals – hunting penguins along beaches and ice edges

  • Weddell and crabeater seals – hauled out on remaining ice and beaches

Seabirds:

  • Wandering albatross – the largest flying birds on Earth, with wingspans exceeding 3 meters, breeding at several sites

  • Light-mantled albatross – graceful soarers nesting on cliff faces

  • Giant petrels, cape petrels, and snow petrels – abundant throughout coastal areas

  • South Georgia pipits – the world's most southerly songbird, endemic to the island

Reindeer (historical):

  • Introduced by Norwegian whalers, though eradication programs have removed them to protect native vegetation

Your flexible schedule means spending entire days photographing king penguin courtship behavior, returning to elephant seal beaches when light improves, and waiting for wandering albatross to perform their elaborate courtship dances.

Discover landscapes via hiking and mountaineering

South Georgia's alpine character creates some of the Southern Ocean's most dramatic landscapes, with glaciated peaks rising directly from the sea to over 2,900 meters. Your private charter accesses terrain matching your group's abilities and ambitions, from coastal walks to technical alpine climbs.

Expert guides lead everything from gentle beach hikes among penguin colonies to challenging attempts on peaks that have seen fewer ascents than many Himalayan summits. The island's eleven major mountain ranges offer endless opportunities for experienced mountaineers, with proper equipment and guides who understand the rapidly changing weather conditions.

Popular hiking routes include:

  • Shackleton's crossing – multi-day trek retracing his legendary route (requires significant fitness and mountaineering skills)

  • Fortuna Bay to Stromness – challenging day hike over a mountain pass

  • Grytviken to Maiviken – moderate coastal walk with whale bones and wildlife

  • Gold Harbour coastal walks – accessible routes among massive king penguin colonies and elephant seals

The island's vegetation includes tussock grass reaching heights of 2 meters, creating unique hiking environments and habitat for ground-nesting birds. In protected valleys, surprisingly diverse flora thrives including South Georgia's endemic species found nowhere else on Earth.

Weather changes rapidly, with katabatic winds descending from glaciers creating challenging conditions. Your guides monitor forecasts, assess conditions in real-time, and ensure safe travel while maximizing opportunities to explore this spectacular landscape.

Discover waters via kayaking, stand-up paddling, and snorkeling

South Georgia's fjords and bays create extraordinary paddling environments, with your yacht serving as a mobile base camp for water-based exploration:

Kayaking:

  • Launch directly from the vessel into protected bays and fjords

  • Paddle among icebergs calving from tidewater glaciers

  • Navigate through kelp forests hosting diverse marine life

  • Experienced kayakers tackle longer crossings in Southern Ocean conditions

  • Beginners learn techniques in sheltered locations under expert instruction

  • Close approaches to fur seal colonies and penguin beaches (with appropriate caution)

Stand-up paddling:

  • Higher vantage point for photography and wildlife observation

  • Access to shallow bays where penguins swim past

  • Modern SUP boards suitable for most fitness levels

  • Full immersion gear provided for cold water safety

Snorkeling (in drysuits):

  • Surface interactions with fur seals and penguins

  • Observe kelp forest ecosystems from water level

  • Watch king penguins porpoising past underwater

  • Less technical than diving but memorable encounters with curious wildlife

Wildlife photography from water:

  • Unique perspectives of elephant seal harems from kayak level

  • Eye-level shots of king penguins entering and exiting surf

  • Approaching fur seal colonies safely from the water

Practice and improve photography skills

Your private charter removes typical photography constraints. Return to rookeries when light improves, position for sunrise on glaciated peaks, or spend entire days at Salisbury Plain documenting the chaos of hundreds of thousands of king penguins.

Professional photography guides (available on request) provide tailored instruction from basic exposure to advanced wildlife behavior photography, helping you master challenges like capturing fast-moving fur seals, photographing wandering albatross in flight, exposing for white snow and dark penguin plumage simultaneously, and creating compelling environmental portraits in South Georgia's dramatic landscapes. Review images together each evening and adjust approaches for the next day's opportunities.

South Georgia yacht charter FAQs

When is the best time of year to take a yacht charter to South Georgia?

The South Georgia cruise season starts in November and ends in March. There are no visitors during the winter months due to the harsh conditions.

Each month of the visitor season offers something different.

November is spring in South Georgia, and king penguins begin to lay their eggs ashore. Humpback whales often arrive at this time in the Southern Ocean; seabirds return and begin nesting. Elephant seals come ashore to breed, with bulls fighting it out to see who will reign as 'beachmaster' and head of their herd.

December is the first month of summer, when the days are longest and warmest. The beaches are packed with fur seals and most birds have laid their eggs. In January, the final king penguins are laying their eggs.

In February, when the days are longest the fluffy king penguin chicks begin to run around and call for their parents who often go out fishing and return filled to the brim with fish and krill. Albatross chicks are hatching and grow rapidly, while juveniles practise their courtship dances.Seals moult on the beaches while skuas soar above the colonies looking for sources of food within the penguin colonies.

As autumn begins in March, adult fur seals return to the sea, leaving their pups ashore, and whales can regularly be seen in the waters around South Georgia.

Are there any additional costs I should be aware of when chartering a yacht to South Georgia?

Our South Georgia yacht charters are offered on an all-inclusive basis. All meals are included on Secret Atlas private charters, freshly cooked each day by our superb chefs. Safety equipment, fuel, guides, and crew are all included in the price.

Additional fees for activities such as museum visits or your personal contributions to the South Georgia Heritage Trust are not included. Nor are tips for the crew or flights to and from the embarkation/disembarkation point for your South Georgia private expedition.

What’s the best type of ship to charter to get the most out of a South Georgia yacht charter?

Our fleet of ice-breaking expedition-style ships are perfect for adventures in South Georgia. They can take you to the remotest beaches where king penguin colonies throng in their thousands, away from the cruise ship crowds.

They are agile, go-anywhere ships designed for ultimate safety in the remotest environments on Earth.

What permits are required for yacht travel in South Georgia?

Some locations have restrictions or require permits – but we take care of all this for you.

What is the duration of your private charters to South Georgia?

A South Georgia yacht charter will typically last between eight and 12 days, although we can plan longer trips if you wish.
