Expedition guide and Naturalist

Expertise

Katja is an expedition guide and naturalist with experience in both the Arctic and Antarctica. In 2019, she moved spontaneously to Svalbard, which she continues to call home. Living there gives her a deeply personal perspective, enriched by firsthand stories of daily life in Svalbard and a broader interest in Arctic communities—particularly Greenland, with its rich traditions, culture, and beliefs. Her passion spans ice, nature, wildlife, and history, reaching as far back as the age of dinosaurs.

Impact

Katja is part of a lively Arctic community and cares deeply about the people and places around her. She strives to understand, respect, and protect nature, local communities, and fragile ecosystems. Mindful of her own footprint while living in the High North, she hopes to educate and inspire guests to become ambassadors for the polar regions—sharing their stories and caring for them long after the journey ends.

Style

Katja loves adapting plans when weather, wildlife, or hiking opportunities open the door to new adventures. Some days, that adventure can be a long, demanding hike; on others, it’s a quiet, personal moment spent gazing at a glacier front and soaking in the pure silence. With a background as a firefighter, safety is always her top priority—and on that, there is no compromise.

“Polar regions are not inherently self-explanatory. While their unique beauty can reveal itself under a wide range of conditions, fully appreciating their nuances and details requires time, patience, and informative guidance.”

About Katja Scholz

Less than two months. That’s my answer to the question of how long it took from hearing my first story about Svalbard to deciding to move there.

Everything happened fast—almost unreal. At the time, I was living in the UK and had spontaneously visited a travel fair. There, someone spoke about Svalbard: the ice, the atmosphere of the dark season, the midnight sun, the wildlife, and its unique community life. I knew immediately that I had to see it with my own eyes.

And then it completely captured me. I had planned to spend just one adventurous week on the archipelago—joining a multi-day snowmobile trip, dog sledding, and exploring the town. Instead, I somehow ended up accepting a local job offer, flying home to resign from my job, selling my belongings, and returning only a few weeks later.

Since then, the rollercoaster has never stopped. Each summer, my world has expanded as I’ve travelled aboard expedition ships—to the north, east, south, and west. To the ice edge. To Greenland. Antarctica.
