Margherita Lucadello
Polar Guide and Expedition Specialist
Expertise
My career began in marine biology research, where I earned a Master’s degree with a strong focus on polar ecology, particularly through fieldwork in Svalbard. That scientific foundation and time in the field naturally drew me toward expedition logistics and guiding. I went on to spend several seasons guiding voyages in both the Arctic and Antarctic.
At Secret Atlas, I work as a Polar Guide and Expedition Specialist. I use my knowledge of polar environments, wildlife behaviour, and logistics to help guests choose the right expedition and prepare for it fully. What excites me most is sharing my passion for these regions—guiding people through the different destinations and seasons and seeing them develop the same deep respect for fragile environments that has shaped my own career.
What makes my role rewarding is how it combines field experience with direct guest engagement. I can bring firsthand insights into wildlife behaviour, seasonal changes, and ecological shifts, transforming complex details into meaningful stories and guidance for our guests. It’s about making the impact immediate and tangible, which is what I value most.
Passion
Outside of work, I spend as much time as possible outdoors—walking, hiking, and immersing myself in the woods, mountains, or by the river. Walking, in particular, has become a meditative pastime for me. Just putting one foot in front of the other on a mountain trail clears my head completely.
I also love to draw and write, even if I don’t consider myself a great artist. Recently, I’ve been learning to play the piano—a completely different kind of challenge that requires focus in a new way. And one unusual pastime I enjoy is juggling: it’s a fun way to sharpen concentration and coordination, and it always gets a smile when I bring it out during an expedition.
Habitat
I live in the north of Italy, in a small town nestled beneath the mountains and beside a beautiful river perfect for summer swims. It took travelling far and wide to truly appreciate my hometown, but now I treasure it. I’m surrounded by woods, fields, animals, and many of the people I love—it feels just right.
Living outside a big city has a huge influence on my lifestyle. Just 50 metres from my door, a trail leads directly into the forest, feeding my love of hiking and spending time in nature.
Once, I was entirely a sea person—my degree in marine biology speaks for itself—but over time I’ve become just as drawn to the mountains. Now, I’m grateful to live where I can enjoy the balance of both.

Questions & Answers
My most transformative travel experience
My first research expedition to Svalbard was the single most influential experience of my career. It introduced me to the polar regions and set me firmly on the path to becoming a guide.
The wilderness of that place was unlike anything I had ever encountered. I felt so small in that vast landscape, yet so connected to it. It reshaped my priorities completely and left me with a lasting fascination and respect for the polar world.
My exploration inspiration
My biggest inspiration comes from nature itself—the idea that in every unexplored place, there are still animals and plants I’ve never seen. It feels like stepping onto a new planet each time, with endless discoveries waiting.
I’m also deeply inspired by modern marine biologists and researchers. They work quietly and with immense resilience, often in extreme conditions, pushing the boundaries of what we know about the ocean’s depths. Their dedication reminds me why exploration matters.
My dream adventure
The Galápagos Islands are my ultimate dream destination. They’re a living laboratory, teeming with species found nowhere else.
I would love to have respectful, close encounters with the marine megafauna I haven’t yet seen—like whale sharks or grey whales. Experiencing such unique biodiversity would be both humbling and unforgettable.
