What is Expedition Micro Cruising?

Here at Secret Atlas, as pioneers of the Expedition Micro Cruise, it’s fair to say we know a thing or two about expedition cruising. But what exactly is expedition cruising? And what’s our ‘secret’? Read on to find out more…

What is expedition cruising?

Expedition Micro Cruising is the most intimate way to explore the world’s last great wildernesses — the Arctic and Antarctica. Unlike conventional expedition cruises carrying hundreds of passengers, our voyages are limited to just 12 guests in the Arctic and 44 guests in Antarctica and South Georgia.

This small scale transforms everything about the guest experience: from the freedom to explore hidden fjords and remote landings, to the camaraderie of travelling with a small group of like-minded explorers.

Why Small is Better: The Essence of Expedition Micro Cruising

Large expedition ships often carry 200–500 passengers. On those vessels, every landing is a logistical operation, with guests waiting in rotation for their turn ashore. By contrast, micro cruises keep numbers so low that everyone can explore together.

  • More time ashore and on the water – With just a handful of guests, disembarkation is quick. Instead of waiting in line, you’re already stepping into a zodiac, heading towards a penguin rookery or glacier front.

  • Access to remote places – Our small ships can navigate narrow fjords, ice-choked channels, and shallow bays that larger vessels simply can’t reach.

  • Flexibility and spontaneity – Conditions in the polar regions change rapidly. We can adjust course to follow a pod of whales, linger longer with a polar bear, or reroute to where the light is perfect for photography.

This freedom and immediacy is what makes micro cruising feel like a true expedition rather than a packaged tour.

A Deeper Connection with Nature

Travelling with a tiny group means the wilderness is never drowned out by the noise of a crowd. Picture yourself:

  • Standing quietly on the tundra as a herd of reindeer grazes nearby.

  • Sharing a zodiac with only a handful of fellow explorers as an iceberg calves thunderously into the sea.

  • Sitting in silence among thousands of penguins, hearing nothing but the rustle of feathers and the occasional squawk.

These are moments of stillness and awe that can only happen when you’re far from the crush of mass tourism.

The Human Scale: Community and Expertise

Expedition Micro Cruises are as much about people as they are about places. Onboard, you’ll quickly get to know your fellow travellers, guides, and crew. Conversations flow naturally over shared meals, evening recaps, or out on deck under the midnight sun.

Our hand-picked expedition leaders — naturalists, historians, photographers — have time to engage with you personally. You’ll ask questions, learn in small groups, and often form lasting friendships.

Arctic vs Antarctica: Different Worlds, Same Intimacy

Arctic Micro Cruises

(12 guests)
  • Explore Svalbard, East Greenland, and the Norwegian Arctic with a true “private expedition” feel. Days are long under the midnight sun, wildlife is abundant — polar bears, walrus, Arctic fox, reindeer, seabirds — and land hikes bring you close to the tundra and glaciers.

Antarctica & South Georgia Micro Cruises

(44 guests)
  • Journey to the White Continent and beyond with enough space for comfort, yet still far smaller than traditional ships. Land together at penguin rookeries, cruise in zodiacs among towering icebergs, and witness the raw drama of the Southern Ocean without ever feeling lost in a crowd.

In both regions, the experience is one of intimacy, flexibility, and discovery.

Sustainability: A Smaller Footprint

Micro cruising is not only better for guests, it’s better for the planet. Fewer people means:

  • Reduced disturbance to wildlife.

  • Less waste and lighter environmental impact.

  • Easier implementation of strict biosecurity measures.

For us, sustainability isn’t a buzzword — it’s a guiding principle. We operate in some of the most fragile ecosystems on Earth, and keeping groups small is one of the most effective ways to protect them.

Why Choose Secret Atlas

  • Pioneers of Expedition Micro Cruises — we created this category because we believe the polar regions should be explored in small groups.

  • The smallest group sizes in the industry — just 12 or 44 guests, compared with 200–500 on traditional expedition ships.

  • Authentic, owner-led independence — we’re not a corporate cruise line; we’re explorers passionate about sharing these regions responsibly.

  • Expert teams — polar guides, photographers, and naturalists who live and breathe the Arctic and Antarctica.
