Personal Note

I’m Konsta Punkka, a Finnish wildlife and adventure photographer, and I’m thrilled to share a little about myself with you. For the past 15 years, I’ve immersed myself in the captivating world of photography. While I initially started as a commercial music photographer, my passion for nature and wildlife gradually steered me towards the great outdoors. This transformative journey led me to become a full-time wildlife and nature photographer, specializing in capturing intimate portraits of animals in their natural habitats.

Hailing from Finland, where the northern regions hold a special place in my heart, I find myself irresistibly drawn to cold environments over warm ones. Consequently, about ten years ago, Svalbard caught my attention as an intriguing destination. Since then, I’ve embarked on numerous visits to this breathtaking Arctic region, braving both its summers and harsh winters. As a photographer, my primary objective during these visits is to leverage my storytelling abilities and photographs to showcase the beauty and fragility of the Arctic to my audience. Through my work, I hope to inspire a shift in people’s perspectives on climate change.

Exploring the Arctic necessitates the use of a small expedition vessel. Each day presents new opportunities and surprises, making it an unpredictable and thrilling experience. Opting for a smaller crew and vessel provides the flexibility needed to make the most of the schedule and ensures incredible wildlife encounters. Throughout our photo tour, participants will have the privilege of observing various mammal and Arctic bird species. Expect enchanting encounters with walruses, whales, polar bears, and arctic foxes, all illuminated by the stunning autumnal light.

When photographing wildlife, I always take a moment to appreciate the scene before capturing the first photos. While intimate portraits are crucial for documenting the trip, I strive to depict animals within their natural environments. Instead of haphazardly clicking away, I carefully consider the landscape surrounding the animal, searching for compositions that best encapsulate the overall environment. Additionally, the perspective from which we photograph can set us apart as photographers. Capturing wildlife at eye level grants them the respect they deserve within the frame. However, we shouldn’t overlook other angles either, as shooting from higher to lower perspectives can showcase the vastness of the landscape.

In a vast expanse like Svalbard, binoculars play a vital role. They enable us to spot wildlife from a distance, providing the best opportunities for capturing breathtaking photographs. Of course, proper clothing is essential, given the unpredictable weather conditions. A combination of weatherproof gear and warm layers is a must-have. While long lenses and high-quality cameras can offer advantages when photographing wildlife from a distance, it’s crucial to remember that you are the artist behind the lens. Nowadays, even with just a phone, you can capture incredible and impactful photos and videos. So, I firmly believe that the equipment doesn’t solely determine the outcome. With creativity and skill, remarkable images can be created regardless of the gear used.

During this photo tour, my colleague Hannes Becker and I will be by your side, providing guidance and support throughout the journey. Whether you’re a professional or an amateur photographer, our goal is for every participant to return home with amazing photos from this extraordinary adventure.
