Ali Liddle

Expedition Leader

Ali is an experienced Expedition Leader and Guide working on polar expedition ships. She´s also a fully qualified Primary School teacher with around 17 years teaching experience both in the UK and in the Falkland Islands, where she lived for 15 years.

For the last 11 years, she has shared her employment time between contracts as an Expedition Guide and Expedition Leader on a small expedition cruise ship working in Antarctica and the Arctic, and short term supply teaching in a number of schools. Prior to this, she was living and working in the Falkland Islands where she taught at the Infant and Junior School in the role as Class teacher and Senior Teacher/Key Stage 1 Coordinator for many years. She also worked for Falklands Conservation, where she was employed as their Environmental Education Officer for 5 years.

Biography

  • Travelling Teacher with Camp Education in the Falkland Islands – living and working with families on remote farms around the islands; teaching their children in what were obviously small mixed age groups.
  • Lived on the remote sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia for 9 months accompanying her (then) husband.
  • Full time Environmental Education Officer at Falklands Conservation on a sabbatical from school to complete an OTEP Environmental Education project for the schools both in the Falkland Islands and Ascension Island, South Atlantic.
  • Part time Primary teacher at Stanley Infant and Junior school, Falkland Islands with additional role as Environmental Education Co-ordinator for the whole of the education department.
  • Full time Expedition Leader and Zodiac Driver on board a cruise ship travelling to Antarctica, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and other Atlantic Islands such as Tristan da Cuhna, St Helena and Ascension Island as well as to the Arctic; Spitsbergen and Greenland. Employed by Oceanwide Expeditions.
  • Through an OTEP (Overseas Territories Environment Programme) funded environmental education project she adapted areas of the National Curriculum, units of work in areas of Science and Geography in schools in the Falkland Islands and on Ascension Island and produced a wide range of teaching resources to allow teachers to utilise the unique environments of both locations. Through this programme and whilst working for Falklands Conservation she published three books – Plants of the Falkland Islands, Penguin Arts and Crafts and Albatross Arts and Crafts.
